I’ve been spending months trying to wade through the thought processes of Townhall conservative columinists like George Will, Charles Krauthammer, Dick Morris, Michael Gerson, Dennis Prager, Michael Medved, Ann Coulter and one I am trying to read regularly Michael Barone. There are so many more.
Why I bring this up has to do with making awareness of how disdainful the fringe truly is. They think their something between 50 and 200K rally at the Capital last weekend was the be all end all rally of their call to action. It was organized by Glenn Beck and had involvement of Dick Armey and other neocon, and conservative lobbies. The talking heads made mistake after mistake as to how big their crowd was, and called the MSM out for ignoring their million size gathering. When discovered the actual number was more likely 70K at most, they took the cue to lower there claim to at least 200K. It is possible they had 200K, but not likely.
These people are the so called Patriots, the so called American people. They call themselves this, they act like they have the most real view of what America needs, and that all others are weak leftist liberals, who hate America, and will take their freedoms via tyranny. There is a very viral form of Constitutionalist oath takers spreading the need to fight for their freedoms. This is a fear mongering vitriolic attack machine.
They have a partisan desire to take their agenda viral and create a group of oath takers. Yesterday at my state Capital was a rally of Patriots. They were called to take the oath to the Constitution. The idea being that these who take the oath will defend the Constitution with violence if somehow Obama comes forth with detention camps, or calls up the national guard to quell a large force of Constitutionalists forming a rally with gun totting 2nd amendment fear mongers. A rally that they intend to march to a presidential speech.
Listening to them you get the sense of what it was like when Hitler fomented nationalist fears and rallied the Germans to fascism.
If you listen to Patriot radio you’ll get the sense of what their mentality is. It is worth noting this movement is growing in momentum and has made efforts to foment defense via violence to defend its actions (rights under the Constitution).
This is all stemming from the debate on healthcare, the stimulus, etc….
We are now just going into reconciliation with the possible Senate and House versions of healthcare. So, why the fuss when it’s time to get the real work done.
Seems to me there is a lot of jumping the gun going on. From vitriolic fringe, fear mongers, to Air America calls for no compromise on single payer.
I for one do not want to kill off the private insurance industry. I do not want a behemouth federal agency running all of healthcare for America. I do not think it will be as cost saving and effective as views on the left state. I have looked at the UK health system and it has some very good qualities and a lot of expensive problems. I think our idea for a public option should stay in the category of option and revolve around some department of Medicare.
I think Medicare should become viable within our U.S. budget before we think we can work in an unaffordable single payer, universal healthcare department.
I think the fringe should not be ignored, because danger is lurking. Glenn Beck is fomenting it.
