By all the rules, it should be automatic.
No question about it: the winner to take Teddy Kennedy’s seat in the United States Senate race in Massachusetts, the bluest of all the blue states, should be a Democrat.
And it’s especially important this year, because Democrats need that seat to hold onto 60 votes on health care.
But, this time, there may be trouble. Democrat Martha Coakley has a tough race, and could even lose it to Republican Scott Brown.
Most observers say Coakley’s still going to win. But nobody knows for sure because the polls are all over the place. One has Brown up by 1 point; the Boston Globe has Coakley ahead by 17.
At the eleventh hour, Democrats have turned up the heat. Sending millions of dollars into the state for last-minute TV ads – and turning union members loose to pound on doors. They know they can’t afford to lose this one.
With so much at stake, here’s the big surprise: the White House says President Obama has no plans to go to Massachusetts and campaign for Martha Coakley.
Why not? Doesn’t Obama believe Teddy Kennedy’s seat is worth fighting for? Apparently not.
It’s a decision Obama may live to regret.

I hope Coakley loses and NObama ends up with mud on his face.
