Tim Tebow Trivializes Religion

Jesus said a lot of strong things. But one of the strongest things he ever said was: When you pray, don’t be like those hypocrites who like to stand on a street corner and pray, so everybody can see them.

Somebody ought to tell that to Tim Tebow.

Broncos quarterback Tebow’s not only a Christian. He wants everybody to know he’s a Christian. He brags about it, constantly. He wears Bible verses on his face. He kneels in prayer after every touchdown. And he thanks his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for every win.

There’s only one thing wrong with that. By dragging God into every football game, Tebow makes a mockery of Christianity – and trivializes religion. The truth is, God doesn’t care who wins an election, a bingo game, or a football game. Sorry, Tebow, Jesus is not a Broncos fan.

Now, if you’re one of the silly millions of Americans who loves Tebow’s in-your-face kind of Christianity, consider this. What if he were a devout Muslim, who bowed to Mecca after every touchdown and shouted “Allahu Akbar?”

Somehow, I don’t think we’d be celebrating him as a national hero.

That’s my parting shot for today.

  1. Mike says:

You are making a bold statement that God doesn’t care about who is elected, who wins a ball game and who wins at bingo. Then what does God care about then? Please answer that.

  2. Dan Livingston says:

Tim Tebow is a Christian minister who happens to play football. Telling him to not share his faith in Jesus Christ on the football field is like telling a pastor not to edify Him in his church. The football field is Tebows church and he is one powerful preacher. Mr. Press ask how we “Christians” would act in Tim Tebow was a Muslim and he bowed to Mecca and shouted “Allahu Akbar” after each touchdown. Well Mr. Press we as Christians would probably do very little because if we acted toward a Muslim the exact same way you have publicly acted toward a Christian we would be labled insensitive and charged with a hate crime. You said Tim Tebow is a disgrace to Christianity. Well Mr. Press you are definately much more of a disgrace to the non-Christian. You use scripture out of context againt Tebow. What about the scripture that says “If you are ashamed of Me before man, I will be ashamed of you before My Father”. Tim Tebow knows the truth. He is living it. Tim Tebow is an example to our young people of a pro athlete who does not use illegal drugs or chemicals, does not commit crimes or get arrested, does not abuse women, like so many other pro atletes. Seems like they would be the ones you are attacking. Oh yes. thats what they did with Jesus (the one with a clean record) they publicly crucified him. But he never openned his mouth in defense. Why? Truth needs no defense. Neither does Tebow.

  3. Dan Livingston says:

Amazing how “one” light has stirred up so much darkness. The power of “one” Christian whi is filled with the light of Christ and is not ashamed of it. God Bless Tebow.

  4. Tom Jenkins says:

I think you ought to apologize to Tim Tebow. When any man praises our Lord “JESUS CHRIST” we should respect his views just as you want to be respected. Merry Christmas.

  5. Patriot1 says:

Bill press is a disgrace who will never amount to a tenth of the man Tebow is. Last time I checked, the first amendment is still in effect. I know BP thinks this only applies to those with liberal/socialist agendas, but actually it protects Tebows right to talk about Jesus any time he wants. Mr. Press, don’t you have some big government social program (funded by the “wealthy”) to shove down our throat? Leave this young man alone.

  6. Frank says:

Hello sir; Why do people hide behind their religion and call it by different names like , coors light or budwiser. Its ok to give praise to ourselves by what we drink or drive. But dont give praise to God who is our creator . Oh no dont make me aware of God and sin and Hell or Heaven. Just keep the booze coming and the stuff that comes with it. A fool mocks righteousness.

  7. *sigh* We keep hearing about ‘religious bigotry’ because Lowe’s pulled advertizing from a reality TV show for God’s sake, but this is REAL religious bigotry and you Muslim loving liberals eat it up.

Face it, the hate is all about hating Jesus, and Christians, and since Islam is anti-Christian and anti-Bible, you all defend it. Bill is simply spewing religious bigotry here, nothing more, nothing less. I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for giving me the words here.

  8. Michael says:

We all should be giving God our praises and thanks for all the blessings we have everyday. Especially for sending his Son Jesus Christ. But by us Christians being so passive by allowing the ignorant minority dictate the way we can say God or Jesus in the public arena, we are losing those blessings we take for granted everyday. Right on Mr Tebow, may your witness help open the eyes of the blind man and GOD BLESS YOU.

  9. J L says:

Bill, you were bragging on the Mike Gallegher Show tonight that you went to seminary school, therefore you were an expert on scripture.Yet,you came out with the same bitterness that Michael Shermer came out with after studying for ministry.
Sad and pathetic. And no,we don’t hate you.We just don’t listen to your show(as you should’nt watch Broncos games)

  10. Susan Coffey says:

I was saddened today to read that Christopher Hitchens lost his battle with cancer and passed away. It’s rather
ironic that Christ is in his name, since he didn’t believe Jesus Chist is God. I, as well as many other
believers, prayed for him to trust in Christ as his own
personal Saviour, before he died. He certainly knows now, one way or the other, that there is a God, and a heaven and a hell. If he could, I’m sure he would come back and tell every unbeliever, that indeed God, heaven
and hell do exist and that Jesus Christ, indeed, is Lord!

  11. Brian Brady says:

    Ladies and Gentleman:

    First, Merry Christmas to everyone.

Next, All the continuous reporting of disapproval pertaining to Tebow’s belief in an almighty God is coming from liberal left news media and liberal left talk show programs.

Do we, the believers in an Almighty God or Creator, have to say anything more.

OH, for everyone reading this post: “May The God of Your Soul Be With You Along Your Journey Of Life” by Bayou Bullet

  14. Wayne says:

I’m 53 years old and never heard of you before – that is until today.

BUT, I’ve heard the name Tim Tebow for the last 5+ years.

What grade are you in? Let me guess – 7th?

  15. JR says:

Not religious but what I don’t get is why you care to the degree of being nasty about it in public? The guy is free to believe whatever he wants, so what is the big deal? I don’t care who he prays to or what he prays about, and truly neither should you.

Tolerance is about tolerating what you don’t believe in. You might want to try it. I’m actually far more offended by your comments and not at all by Tebow’s actions. He’s harmless, you’re not.

  16. steph says:

When you get fired from cnn, you know your a liberal loser. And aren’t you a little old to be saying stfu.

  17. Gesus says:

Thank god someone finally has the sac to call it like it is (nice work Bill). We all enjoy watching top athletes compete, but proselytizing on national TV during an interview is disgusting at best. No one wants to hear that crap. There is a time and place for worship; sporting events ain’t it.

    Shalome…

  18. Dean says:

Bill, I don’t recall you or any other liberal pundit telling Muhammed Ali to STFU when he bowed to Mecca and prayed to Allah before and after every boxing match. So don’t play the “what if he were a muslim” game; the fact is liberal trash like you don’t have principles, you are hateful and constantly direct your vitriol at those who don’t agree with your morally-bankrupt, anti-Christian doctrine…

  19. far2right says:

Bill is spot on right. He knows more about the religion of Christ then almost all professed Christians (I stress “professed”). I say this to their shame for an atheist knows more than today’s so-called Christian. Many will say, “Lord, Lord”. But He will say to them, “I never knew you”.

I hold myself to be a follower of Christ. I therefore take His commands seriously. Those who pray in public put their self-righteousness on display. That is the whole POINT of His command. I refuse to stand when a pretend preacher prays at public events. His Jesus is not the Lord Jesus Christ. America’s christendom is grossly unbibilical.

Tebow has his reward (Matt 6:5). And it is not looking good.

I challenge Tebow to follow after Christ! Stop disobeying Him. The best tribute you could give to the Lord is to pray to Him in your closet.

  20. Mike says:

Watching Tim Tebow systematically dismantle 100 years of progressive “progress” towards communism and a Godless society is pure bliss. Broncos 23, Patriots 20.

  21. techwreck says:

Bill, You and Tebow agree that God isn’t a Bronco fan and doesn’t care who wins football games. Tim is on record on that score. So, what is it that is really bothering you about Tim’s remarks about his faith?

I thought you were a strong supporter ofthe First Amendment.

  22. Bill Green says:

    Mr. Press G.T.H.

  23. Marco B. says:

Tebowing after every touchdown is natural to Tim Tebow. If there is a Muslim quarterback saying Allah Akbar to every touchdown, America will cheer for that man. America will cheer his football skill and tolerate his tebowing like Tebow. America is great. We have had presidents Bushes (whites). At present, we have President Obama (black). Soon we will have a President Romney? (Mormon). So a Christian, Muslim or Mormon quarterback tebowing in the field to say thank you to God is natural to one who practice good faith even in public. The problem is – tebowing (or any other form of praying in public) is not intellectual in America today.

  24. Douglas Q. says:

You plainly consider yourself quite the wit. You are half right. Somewhere, your former village laments the loss of its idiot. STFU, and GTH, SOB.

  25. Douglas Q. says:

    Merry Christmas!

  26. Devon M says:

God doesn’t care about sports, but He does want us to glorify Him and that’s exactly what Tebow is doing. As far as the Bible verse that denounces those who preach on the streets and wear long faces during fasting – that refers to those who do so for their own glory.

Tebow is obviously genuinely glorifying God and not himself. The bottom line comes to what God wants…not anybody else. And God would want to be revered anytime, day or night, rain or shine. In Proverbs 15 and countless other times the Bible states God loves praise and worship.

Finally, I think it is unfortunate that anybody would frown at Tebow’s or anybody else’s “Christian” behavior in the public eye, when you can find so much vanity and pride on tv nowadays.

Tebow has been an excellent role model and through his Christian show of faith, millions have been reminded of what really is important in this life. For those of you who aren’t ready to hear/see the truth or just plain don’t like it – change the channel – there are hundreds of godless vain reality shows and prideful celebrities to follow.

  27. Pedro says:

    Bill,
What a hateful little miserable cockroach you are. You have some serious anger issues that you need to deal with. You are an embarrasment and a disgrace to all Christians. I am not a religous person but hateful bigots like yourself absolutely disgust me. What the hell did Tim Tebow ever do to you that you hate him so much. I believe these are the reasons:He isn’t getting a ton of women pregnant. He isn’t involved in dog-fighting. He doesn’t beat women. He doesn’t do drugs. He is respectful to everyone, even to hate filled bigots like yourself. He does a ton of charity work. He is a law abiding citizen. He is having a hospital built in the Phillipines. And the list goes on. So tell me something you miserable wretch,Would it make you happy if he went out and started committing crimes? Of course it would with your sick, twisted thinking. It is you who should STFU.

  28. Pedro says:

@far2right, Pray in your closet, seriously? This isn’t North Korea or any other communist country for that matter. In these countries, yes you may have to pray in your closet. Freedomm of religion is protected in this country. Tim Tebow has every right to pray to Jesus as he pleases. Also Jesus was calling out hypocrites for praying in public. Tim Tebow is not a hypocrite so stop making things up you arrogant jerk!

  29. KYMAN says:

This really is not about religion as most of us practice it. Bill hates the tebows of the world because he is decent and his decency and overt christian stance is shared by a group he hates worse than christians–republicans! Bill and his ilk worship the earth, government, trees, each other, anything but God.And since conservatives vote gop Bill hates us. So God should not be too offened, this is about politics not religion. But then i guess it is to the progressives, since politics is their religion. Tebow and other decent people like Sarah Palin are despised by the left because they represent something wholesome and good that the liberals cannot handle. It reminds them just how decadent they are.

  30. KC says:

Why do you even care Mr. Press? Really it’s none of your business. Maybe if people like you would concentrate on what’s good instead of bashing people because they don’t think or act the way you do the world might be a better place. My last recollection is that we “Christians” still have rights just like everyone else. Maybe you need to look within yourself first and what your purpose in this life is before you decide to “get your ratings” for something stupid and critical. Tim Tebow, at least he is honest about where he stands how about you? Oh, I guess you’ve already shown that and don’t worry, even though you are the hypocrite we will pray for you too!

  31. Jeff S. says:

BILL PRESS IS A VERY SMALL MAN

Actually Bill, be honest (try it for once!). On the radio you didn’t say Tim Tebow trivializes religion. What you said was “Tim should S-T-F-U”. “S-T-F-U” was the acronym that came out of your mouth.

It made me wonder why the host of a small radio show would communicate such dogmatic hatred, vitriol and spite. Does Bill not support the 1st amendment to the constitution of the United States? (interestingly enough, Bill thinks that Occupy protesters being evicted from public parks due to sanitation violations is a 1st amendment violation, but if someone says something Bill doesn’t like, they should S-T-F-U). Maybe Bill believes that an athlete that gives credit to his lord and savior, and then to all his team-mates is a bad role model for young athletes? Does Bill think Tim Tebow shold act like Terrell Owens, and take the credit all to himself at the expense of his team which has worked so hard with him? Or maybe Bill just hates Christians and Christianity? I think this is probably closer to the truth. It would be refreshing to hear Bill address these issues. But I don’t expect him to. He is a small man and he’ll hide behind his microphone, where only he controls what is said. So please keep hiding little Bill, you small , scared little pathetic man. Or actually, why don’t you just S-T-F-U?

  32. Jon Pavlovsky says:

Consider this Bill. If Christianitywas not under attack from all sides in this country and if you liberal idiots finally undestood what the seperation of church and state meant and stopped using it as your banner arguement to take away the right to worship openly then maybe a Tim Tebow would not have to do his simple signs of thaks to God . But because the attack is constant, Holiday tree, winter solstice , remove nativities stop the knights of Columbus fom hanging a banner saying keep Christ in Christmas suspend kids from school because they sit together during lunch to read etc etc etc. from the bible and pray. So Tim’s simple actions threaten the crap out of weak minded self rightous hypocrites like you. Tim is not tlling you or anyone else how to act or what to believe. Most Christians do not tell you or anyone else how to act or live but oh my you liberals are always telling everyine else how to live and what is right and wrong. You are so threatened by people of faith especially those who are sucessful. Maybe if you shut the F@*k up as you told tim toand the rest of your liberal ilk shut the F up and stopped telling people how to live there would not need to be public expressions of thanks to God. BUT in this secualr world which has now made communities become more fragmented and caused us to have a society of selfish unsociable people who live more in a virtual world then the real world we need more Tim’s we need to say we have had enough of Christian attacks enough of Our rights as Christians being taken away and I hope there are a million Tim Tebows doing just as he is on the street in every town because then maybe your head will explode and you will finally follow your own words and shut the F up.

  33. Stevens says:

If you were condeming a muslim on a football field for thanking their god (sm. g on purpose)…..you would be called a racist…..and would be in danger of being killed by the muslims. Free Speech???? I think not.

  34. suprdude says:

most of y’all seem to be forgetting that mohammed ali retired before it was “cool” to hate muslims.

what if he were a rising star in this day and age?

  35. Tim says:

You obviously don’t have the capability to understand the meaning of what Jesus said. If you did you would know he was talking about selfish attitude of those who did pray in front of others to make themselves look holy. Tim has never boasted or taken credit for any of his abilities, and to be frank he isn’t praying he is witnessing. So before you you start comparing apples to oranges and telling Tim to shut the #@!* up when he has just as many rights to say what he wants as you do on the radio, you should follow your own word and quit and never speak again because no one wants to listen to your garbage. Really! Who is the hypocrite? Tim can’t say what he feels thankful for but you can say anything you want? PLEASE! Take away God out of the picture and you would be praising what a great athlete Tim is and don’t try to deny it, you know you would.

  36. Paul Brooks says:

    Bill,
I’m ashamed on you. At first I thought your commments were just an attempt to generate feedback…either negative of positive. Maybe you made these comments, knowing they would be controversial, just to stir the pot. Well sir, if that was your goal, I would say you succeeded. Tim Tebow, whether you like him or not, is a blessing to us all…Christian or not. I’m am not a go to church every Sunday guy, but I do believe in God. I’m a Tebow fan because of his exploits on the football field as a college player and now as a pro. At every level he’s has succeeded when no one said he had the skills to do so. I’m excited to see him succeed at the pro level.
Good for him….and booo on yu Bill Press. Stop Hate’n on Tim Tebow and be thankful you can experience his effect on the NFL and football fans across the country.

  37. bob david says:

sorry bill, i disagree with you. i can only assume tebow is on the up and up even though god or jesus doesnt give a sh*t if he wins or loses. now i do believe he could call on and even get assistance from his angels or gods or goddesses or what ever name you want to put on them. i believe there is a spiritual force out there and they do have influence. and to be truly religious and have goodness and love in your heart is a good thing whether or not you display it. and to display this quality is always a good thing. what is very revealing is the hate displayed by all these so called christians, truly pathetic.

  38. WAFWV says:

I suggest Mr. Press will have an attitude change at some point in the future when he might find the need for a stronger belief in God and freedom of expression. When the big ball game finally comes to an end, the good and bad deeds, as well as what is in your heart may certainly provide his awakening, as it will for many others. Some people will do anything or say anything to promote their own agenda and I suggest that is the fact with this talk radio host. He is also showing the open book to the thinking process for many left wing freaks who are examples of what our founding fathers destroyed in the original formulation of America. As the left wing influnence continues to spread through the educational systems funded by our own tax dollars, the two ideologies in America are, without doubt, tipping the scales and probably leading to revolution or civil war as past history dictates with the rise and fall of all nations. I suggest Bill is just one example of the additional weight slowing tipping that scale. Respectfully, WFAVW

  39. John says:

    Dear Mr. Press:

I think it is refreshing and encouraging to see Tim Tebow practice his faith in a public fashion. All he really cares about is to do the right thing. He is not a hypocrite for doing so. He has a faith that millions of people have died for. He has the right, privilege and opportunity to speak for the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, who is Jesus Christ.

One day, you, I and everyone will bow the knee to Jesus and declare Him as Lord. Those who have done willingly will go to be with Him in Paradise; those who have not done so willingly will face eternal hell fire. This is what the Bible says (Romans 14:12 and Matthew 25:33-46). So be forewarned. Swearing and cursing this young man only means you are swearing and cursing Christ. If I were you, I wouldn’t be caught in this dire and dangerous position. The Bible says in Psalm 2: Kiss the Son, lest he be angry
and you be destroyed in your way,
for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

I think Tebow supporters do Timmy a disservice by rabidly attacking anyone who criticizes him as anti-this or -that. I am not a Christian but I am a Broncos fan, and anyone who can do what Tebow does is fine by me, along with the stout D and special teams. However, I don’t think it’s wrong to ask him to follow Matthew 6:6 and “[P]ray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”

Bill Press is not trampling on Tebow’s rights (as the 1st amendment only protects the People against our government, not a Liberal talker). I’d prefer Tebow thanked his teamates first, not second, instead of a fairy tale figure (I say that with the utmost reverence). Also, former QB Kurt Warner, hardly a far-left Socialist, has advised Tebow not to trivialize religion, either. Drop the ‘well he hasn’t been caught doing anything illegal therefore don’t ever criticize him’ mindset. It’s cringe-worthy.

Watch him, cheer him on, but don’t use him for your religious agenda as if no one notices.

  42. KB says:

Here is a mass of stupidity and just what a shock jock tries to do to get attention.. Has no concept or understanding of the bible. Ignorance is not bliss… But then we shall see mockers in these days!!!

  43. Elijah says:

I only agree with 1 thing you said . That is that Jesus said some very strong things. Here’s one of them. Jesus said ” He who confesses Me before men, him will I confess before my Father, which is in Heaven, and he who denies Me before men, him will I deny before my Father which is in Heaven.” Peter said, after being threatened by the authorities not to preach in the name of Jesus, “We ought rather to obey God than men.” So Tim Tebow is only doing what comes natural to a believer, giving thanks to his Lord. Not necessarily for a Broncos win, (as you assume), but perhaps just for him being in the position he is in. Sounds like you Bill Press are wanting Tim Tebow to deny Jesus before men, which to him would be obeying a man instead of God. I wonder what fate awaits one who not only denies Jesus His place as Lord, but encourages others to do so.

    I smell smoke !!!

  44. stephanie galante says:

jesus christ from a jewish women for heavens sake good luck this season

  45. Elijah says:

I only agree with one thing you said, and that is that Jesus said a lot of very strong things. Well here’s one for you. Jesus said ” He who confesses Me before men, him will I confess before my Father which is in Heaven, and he who denies me before men, him will I deny before my Father, which is in Heaven.” Peter said, after being threatened by the authorities not to speak in the name of Jesus, “We ought rather to obey God than men.” Tim Tebow is only doing what comes natural to a believer. He is giving thanks to his Lord, not necessarily for a Broncos win, but perhaps just for being in the place in life God has brought him to. But this bothers Bill Press. Oh let’s see. Jesus also said about hypocrites, that not only do they not enter the Kingdom of Heaven themselves, but they deny those who are seeking to enter. He also said “Why is your eye evil, because I am good?” to those who didn’t like His message. HMMMMM, maybe better get the log out of your own eye before you try removing the splinter from Tim Tebows Press.
Wonder what fate awaits those who not only deny Jesus His rightful place as Lord, but try to deny others to do so? I smell smoke!!!!

  46. Harrikatt says:

One has to wonder why you, Billy, seem to care so much about how Tebow chooses to express himself. I really doubt you are concerned that Tebow might give Christianity a bad name. Mostly likely you dispise Christianity, and it’s just as likely that you equally dispise all other religions. But, in America, only Christians are fair game–all the others are off-limits due to PC considerations. Even worse, if you picked on the Jews, you could get fired. And if you picked on the Muslims, you could get killed. Whatever your attributes, Billy-boy, “courage” and “honesty” ain’t among them.

  47. Harrikatt says:

Muhammad Ali, the great boxer, used to start all of his post-fight interviews by, first of all, giving all thanks and praise to Allah. I don’t recall anyone’s having gotten upset about that.

  48. Martin Schrattenholzer says:

I reread Bill’s comments and nowhere did he actually disrespect Tebow by telling him to “STFU”.
Secondly, I agree with Bill, Thanking God after scoring is inappropriate. When Tim is interviewed about some good that he does for the community (or the Phillipines), then it is totally appropriate for him give credit to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for inspiring him to do the good deed. It’s just that, while scoring is an accomplishment, it is not a good deed. That’s the reason God should not be credited with causing it to happen.

  49. steve voigt says:

NO Bill I don’t think a muslim would get the tratment TBow is getting.. I thin the NFL would issue an edic of tokerence, with a big hi 5 from the administratin.count me in as one of the millions happy to see him wearh his faith.. BTW Bill have you ever been to an NFL game and obseerved players from BOTH sides praying after the game.. Or did Muhammod alid get the flack for expressing his muslim faith…

  50. Christian Edmonds says:

Alrighty Billy, i get that you have your own little talk show and you can say what you like, but why feed your liberals this trash. Never.. i repeat “never” has Tebow said the Broncos are Jesus‘ team or accepted the name as God’s quarterback. People give these names to him themselves, but Tebow firmly stated that God doesn’t care who wins. His teammates confirmed that he never cusses, even when he is heated up in the midst of a big game. So please, everyone, you might need to lay off until you actually find something to call Tebow a hypocrite about. It’s terrible that liberals demand that their opinions be heard, but they don’t let Christians have their opinions heard. This is the society we live in. Tebow gives credit to his God for giving him the ability to play the sport and for the “ability to win games,” not for God giving him a win. Liberals know that Christianity is such a threat to their demonic ideas that they will even protest a football player. Christianity is powerful, and they know this. All the while, Bill and full-out liberals are saving the trees, killing the children, and trying to prevent God from being in government. Anyways.. Tebow makes a mockery to liberals, not Christians, because liberals can’t do a thing about what Tebow does. Also, Tebow doesn’t praise himself Bill. He praises God. Tebow doesn’t want people to praise him. He’s also stated that. Bill, you’re obviously wanting all the attention. You‘re the one who’s trying to strike someone down. All Tebow does is praise and lift up God’s name. Who have you lifted up lately, Bill?
